Introduction
I was just scrolling Audubon, the birding app and I saw this bird called the black-crowned night-hereon. Whats surprising about this bird is that it does not look like a hereon at all!
RANGE
This bird lives from Washington, Saskatchewan, Minnesota, and New Brunswick all the way down to South America. So the black-crowned night-hereon has a very wide range across north America.
HABITAT
Marshes, shores, and tree roots. they are found around salt water and fresh water marshes, rivers, ponds, swamps, rice flats, canals, tidal flats.
NESTING
Usually first breeds at 2 years old. they breed in colonies, sometimes alone or are mixed with other birds including other herons, egrets, ibises, sometimes with Franklin's gull. Some colonies are occupied for decades. They usually nest in trees, shrubs, and marshes.
DIET
Mostly fish. also squid, crustaceans, frogs, and snakes.
